Drawing parallels to past interventions, Merz noted, "We have seen what happened in Afghanistan over 20 years; we experienced the same in Iraq." He remarked that Iranian leaders are navigating the situation with great skill, projecting strength beyond international expectations. He also condemned the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), suggesting that their actions are challenging global stability.
The Chancellor emphasized that the conflict is taking a toll on Germany's economy. "The current situation is complex and is causing us significant economic damage. This war against Iran is directly affecting our industrial production," he stated.
Regarding future measures, Merz confirmed that Berlin is prepared to assist in ensuring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, but stressed that any such intervention depends heavily on a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has reiterated the need for credible deterrence in the face of ongoing nuclear threats. Amidst growing regional instability, France and Germany have recently initiated efforts to strengthen their joint nuclear defense and deterrence capabilities.
